Frequently Asked Questions
What primary services do you offer?
We provide “Dignity Bags” – bags of toiletries and comfort items, as well as new or like new clothing to victims of sexual assault or violent crime at the ER. Often times survivors’ clothing is taken as evidence, or is unwearable due to an assault, and many times after hours in the hospital, the exams, and questioning by police, survivors are not given the means to wash or freshen up. We provide items like toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, body wash, shampoo, etc. to help them feel more like themselves.
We also provide new sets of sheets when survivors must give theirs up as evidence when an assault happens in their home/dorm etc.
Project Dignity also partners with local law enforcement, hospitals, and the local Community Violence Intervention Center to provide funding and assistance for other programs or needs as they arrive.
What are the rates of your services?
Our services are provided to victims at no cost.
Who can receive help from Project Dignity?
Our mission is to restore dignity to victims of sexual assault and violent crime . Project Dignity does not, by policy or practice, discriminate against any person or group on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, age, disability, gender identity and expression, marital or military status, or based on any individual’s status in any group or class protected by applicable federal, state, or local law
How do you identify who receives services from Project Dignity?
We strive to protect survivor’s privacy. To that end, Dignity Bags, clothing, and toiletries are kept on hand at the ER. SANE nurses, community violence advocates, and police can access them easily there. We replenish as necessary. Other services are on a case by case basis when Project Dignity is contacted by authorities, therapists, advocates and survivors.
Is this really needed?
Yes, very needed. Since our inception in 2018 we have provided services to several hundred individuals, from ages 6 months to 91 years. Victims of sexual assault need all the support we can provide, and then some.
How does someone receive a Dignity Bag?
When someone is brought to the ER for a forensic exam, and their clothing is taken for evidence, they are given new or like new clothing and a Dignity bag full of comfort and care items, typically by the SANE nurse or community violence advocate. If an individual needs other services, varying agencies such as Law enforcement, Community Violence centers, therapists, and doctors, get in touch with us and we provide what we can.
